NJ State Library, Newark Library & East Side HS Teens Launch PSA for National Gaming Day @ your library, November 14.
As libraries from across New Jersey prepare for National Gaming Day @ your library on Saturday, November 14, a group of Newark, NJ, teens is hoping that an award winning video they produced will create better awareness among young people of the vast amount of entertainment resources offered at their local libraries.
Supported by the NJ State Library and the Newark Public Library, teens from Newark’s East Side High School created a 30 second video public service announcement called “Fernium 8,” a sci-fi movie about a secret agent who sneaks into a space ship and steals a crystal. According to Paul Pattwell, supervising librarian in charge of technology & training at the Newark Public Library, the film has received many accolades, including a spot in the Four River Film Festival in Karlova, Croatia, Best Fiction in the Sixth Annual Newark Public School’s Film Festival, honorable mention in the 35th Annual New Jersey Young Film & Video Maker’s Festival and Official Selection of the 2009 Princeton Student Film & Video Festival, and is now on youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcTJVPqXLBo.
National Gaming Day @ your library will offer special gaming programs and events suitable for the whole family. “Libraries have become family destinations, and are continuously offering new formats and innovative programs and services that educate, entertain and expand interaction with their users,” said Norma Blake, New Jersey State Librarian. “Gaming is yet another example of how libraries are becoming more than just educational resources for the communities that they serve. They are also places where users of all ages are welcome to have fun together.”
National Gaming Day @ your library is a national initiative supported by the American Library Association.
