Nancy Dowd named Petcha Kucha Panelist

Nancy Dowd, Director of Marketing for the New Jersey State Library, has been invited to join a panel of nationally recognized innovators in the library field at Information Today’s Internet Librarian Conference to be held this October. Dowd will be joining Helene Blowers, Columbus Metropolitan Library; Stephen Abram, SirsiDynix; Greg Schwartz, Louisville Free Public Library; Rebecca Jones, Dysart & Jones Associates; and Elaina Norlin, OCLC in a discussion entitled, A Pecha Kucha Conversation Face-Off. Pecha Kucha is Japanese for the sound of conversation and represents a fast-paced series of presentations. Each of the panelists has 6 minutes and 40 seconds along with 20 images to express their opinion about planning and management strategies and techniques in libraries. Dowd will be addressing marketing strategies for libraries.

Michele Stricker Receives Preservation Scholarship

Michele Stricker, a consultant for the New Jersey State Library, has been awarded the Rutger’s Preservation Management Institutes 2008-2009 New Jersey Historical Commission scholarship. The scholarship enables her to attend the PMI courses beginning this October at Rutgers. As part of the program, Stricker will conduct preservation surveys, develop recommendations based on those surveys, and develop components of a preservation plan.

Stricker holds a bachelor’s degree from Tyler School of Art of Temple University, a master of fine arts in Museum Studies from Syracuse University, a master of arts in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s in Library & Information Science from Rutgers University.

State Library Recognized for Excellence in Public Relations

The New Jersey State Library received high honors for excellence in public relations from the American Library Association at its annual national conference in Anaheim, California.

A team of experts in librarianship, public relations and marketing selected the library’s 16-page publication describing the programs and services offered and supported by the State Library for the honor. As a winning entry, the brochure was on display and available to librarians from across the country during the Swap and Shop program “Hot Ideas for Cool PR.”

Sally Lederer, of the Swap & Shop Committee of the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) Public Relations and Marketing Section, presented the award to Nancy Dowd, director of marketing for the New Jersey State Library.

In May, the brochure received a public relations and marketing award in the Service Brochure category from the New Jersey Library Association at its annual state conference.

Peggy Cadigan - Professional Futurist

Peggy Cadigan, the New Jersey State Library’s Consultant for Innovation & Communication, has been accepted as a provisional member of the Association of Professional Futurists, an organization committed to leadership and excellence in the futures field. She is only the second librarian to join the group.

Cadigan has been very involved in examining the future path of public libraries, having served as facilitator for New Jersey State Librarian Norma Blake’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Future and helping to organize the Mid-Atlantic Library Futures Conference.

She earned her bachelor of arts degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, NY, and her master’s degree in library science from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ.

As a provisional member she has three years to complete the professional development process to attain full membership. The process includes professional development components and the assignment of a mentor to guide her. Bob Treadway, a business futurist and founder of Treadway and Associates, will mentor Cadigan. Treadway’s clients include Gillette, Motorola, Berkshire Hathaway and American Express.

APF members provide a unique perspective to anticipate and influence the future, and provide network and community building opportunities for best practice sharing and professional growth.

N.J. Gov. Jon S. Corzine to Keynote 2008 NJTC Annual Meeting

New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine will be the keynote speaker at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) on July 17 at the Forsgate Country Club. The governor is expected to speak about technology’s critical importance to New Jersey’s economy and his Edison Innovation Fund strategy. This event is sponsored by DeVry University, South Jersey Biz Buzz, Mack-Cali Jersey Central Power & Light, PR Newswire and the New Jersey State Library.

State Library’s video named in top 100

The State Library was pleased to see our very own Super Librarian video listed as well one made about the Mid-Atlantic future’s Conference we co-sponsored last May. See the entire list here.

Trump Entertainment Resorts Offers a “Full House” of Training to New Jersey Libraries

Trump Entertainment Resorts, Atlantic City, N.J., and the New Jersey State Library partnered to offer customer service training to more than 100 library staff members on June 19. The training was held at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, NJ. The training session received overwhelmingly positive reviews from those who attended. Full story

Award winning video to help libraries salvage flood damaged collections

Did you know that the most common disaster in New Jersey is flooding? Hurricanes, tropical storms, nor-easters, as well as winter snow melt and ice blockages lead to a major disaster in New Jersey at least once a year.
